Whichever ski resort you visit in the world, you’ll see families enjoying themselves. You’ll see young children taking it easy on the nursery slopes and their more advanced relatives seemingly throwing themselves down mountains.
You’ll see friends on group skiing holidays falling over and laughing and you’ll see more than a handful of couples gliding down the snow romantically.
And if you take the time to look, chances are you’ll see a number of celebrities gracing the slopes, too.
A popular pastime for many a celebrity, if you fancy yourself as a paparazzi or you simply want to say you’ve shared the same snow as someone rich and famous, consider a visit to any of these five celebrity-favourite ski resorts.
1. Courchevel, France
Loved by celebrities all around the globe, from David and Victoria Beckham through to F1 legend David Coulthard, Courchevel 1850 – the highest point in the resort – is the place to visit if you want to ski with some of the world’s best known celebrities.
Located within the Les Trois Vallée (‘The Three Valleys’), Courchevel is part of the largest ski resort in the world and is known to be home to some of Europe’s most expensive restaurants and hotels. However, as long as you take the time to do your research and look into the various Courchevel ski chalets that are available, there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t rub shoulders with the rich and famous whatever your budget.
2. Klosters, Switzerland
A hot spot for British royalty, aristocracy and socialites, a visit to the quaint and (relatively) quiet resort of Klosters will see you likely to bump into Prince William and Kate – as well as William’s brother, Harry – who all adore the resort.
You shouldn’t expect the vibrancy of the more lively Courchevel, but with some of the most stunning views in the world – particularly from the top of Gotschnagrat – and a range of fabulous places to eat and drink, the relaxed atmosphere is something you’ll find you become more than a little accustomed to.
3. Mont Blanc, France / Italy
With numerous ski resorts around Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, you’re almost guaranteed to spot a celebrity whichever resort you stay in – and if you don’t, you’ll still experience some fantastic skiing routes and stunning views.
Take Chamonix on the French side of the mountain as an example. A popular choice for Kate Moss, it has a 12 mile run that’s one of the longest in Europe, as well as a cable car that can take you right across to the Italian side of the mountain to a town called Courmayeur (itself a wonderful skiing location), giving you the opportunity to see everything the resorts have to offer from above.
4. Verbier, Switzerland
Another popular destination for British royalty, Verbier is the choice for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice and their mother, Sarah Ferguson, all of whom make the trip to this stunning Swiss resort regularly.
Adored by many professional skiers because of its challenging slopes and the general atmosphere the resort exudes, Verbier is one of the largest ski resorts in the Swiss Alps and although particularly popular, still retains the feel of a local, friendly village, due largely to the beautiful Verbier ski chalets, apres-ski bars and general Swiss architecture.
5. Zürs, Austria
Staying with royalty, but this time outside of England, Austria’s Zürs is a firm favourite with Princess Caroline of Monaco and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and is widely regarded as one of the most exclusive ski resorts in the world.
Small in comparison to the other resorts mentioned here, you might need more spending money on a visit to Zürs than you would elsewhere, but it would be highly surprising if you didn’t bump into at least the occasional multi-millionaire during your stay.
Any ski holiday should be about the skiing. It should be about the views and the atmosphere; the slopes and the whole experience.
But there’s something special about knowing you’re skiing on the same snow as a celebrity and so if you can take your ski holiday in a resort that’s known for its abundance of rich and famous individuals, you might just find your holiday becomes even better than you thought it was going to be.
